In My Day: We quiz Brenda Shankey on the time of her life

By Staff Reporter

Q: What was your decade?

A: The 1990s. I flourished in my career as a hairdresser and moved from Derry to Belfast in 1995. I met my husband and I got married in 1999.

Q: What was life like?

A: Innocent and adventurous. Innocence in moving to a big city and enjoying being part of it all, adventures of doing bigger, more creative things and meeting new people.

Q: What where you listening to?

A: I liked The Smiths, The Cure, The Stone Roses.

Q: And the style?

A: I wore charity shop vintage clothes with Dr Martens boots! Quite gothic with a boho twist.

Q: What has changed?

A: Me! I wish I knew then what I know now. Life is one big roller-coaster ride, one unbelievable, challenging journey full of highs and lows, setbacks and opportunities. I finally know who I am and what I want now. It's liberating.

Q: Was it better back then?

A: I've learned there is no such thing as a bad experience - it's how you choose to see it and how you deal with life and situations that make your life good or bad.
