Titanic: Girl who refused to wear black

The reception of the Titanic survivors on reaching land involved curiosity, crowds gathered to watch the names and the non-celebrities disembark, and a lot of kindness.

A Women’s Relief Committee was formed, organised by Mrs Nelson H Henry, wife of the Surveyor of the Port, working on the sixth floor of the Metropolitan Life Building.

Money was handed out for immediate needs, and transport, temporary homes and even employment opportunities were arranged .

Clothes were also supplied, and one application that touched the relief workers came from a young girl who had lost her brother. She desperately needed an outfit, but would not accept black as she refused to give up hope.
