A Belfast-born youngster has been crowned the BBC's Young Musician of the Year — the youngest ever winner of the prestigious competition.

Peter Moore, a 12-year-old trombonist, beat off competition from other talented musicians from across the UK in the all-male final held last night at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

The former Orangefield Primary School pupil and the other four finalists played their chosen conertos with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in front of a live judging panel on Saturday evening. Peter performed Tomasi's Trombone Concerto.

All five finalists returned to the stage last night and as each performed a personal piece, the audience was treated to documentary footage of each of the young musicians journey to the final.

Welsh singer and broadcaster Aled Jones hosted last night's concert which culminated in a tense wait before Peter was announced the winner.

Speaking after his amazing success, Peter said: "I have really enjoyed the whole competition and feel really privileged to take part.

"It's been great to work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

"When my mum said I should enter, I thought she was off her rocker but she talked me into it."

The Moore family moved from Belfast to Manchester and they now live in Stalybridge with Peter attending Chetham's School of Music.

All his family are musicians and his parents Jane and Grenville played for the Ulster Orchestra. His brother David is currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and also entered the competition.

Following last night's excitement, the proud parents took their son home following a weekend of drama and tension.

Jane, a music teacher, said: "We are very proud of him and over the moon. He works really hard and what is most important, he enjoys what he does."

The other finalist for the Young Musician of the year were 18-year- old guitarist Jadran Duncumb, 18-year-old flautist David Smith, 18-year-old pianist Erdem Misirlioglu and 17-year-old percussionist Jim Molyneux.
