While posing in underwear for Cosmopolitan, she told the magazine: "I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight - I got made fun of."
Now the singer, real name Stefani Germanotta, loves the spotlight and performing.
She said: "My friends joke that I'm dead until I get on stage. For some people, fame kills it and becomes more important than the music or the performance.
"But for me fame is like rocket fuel. The more my fans like what I'm doing, the more I want to give back to them.
"And my passion is so strong I can't sleep - I haven't slept for three days."
