Nicole Scherzinger has persuaded Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh to shake up the X Factor format.

The former Pussycat Doll, who was standing in as guest judge for Dannii Minogue, suggested the under-25s category should be increased up to 28-year-olds, because there is so many good singers in the over-25 group - so putting some of them in the younger range could help protect them from the chop.

A show spokesperson said: "At Nicole's suggestion, and agreed by Simon and Louis, the boys' and girls' category age limit has been increased to anyone under 28, which the judges believe will strengthen the competition and talent."

In another twist, the number of wannabes from each group going through to the judges' houses stage has increased from six to eight.

Despite rumours to the contrary, the live shows will still kick off with 12 acts.

"Eight acts will now go through to each of the judges' houses. There will still be 12 acts going through to the live shows," the spokesperson added.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
