Recruitment to garda reserve much slower than expected
Monday, 5 February 2007
Recruitment to the new garda reserve is reportedly progressing much more slowly than the Government initially envisaged.
Reports this morning say just 36 people are currently qualified as members of the part-time force and only about 140 are expected to be in place by the time of the upcoming general election.
At this pace, it would reportedly take seven years to recruit and train the 1,500 reservists sought by the Tanaiste and Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell.
However, this morning's reports say the real timetable could be even longer than that when the dropout rate from the reserve becomes clear.
The opposition says the figures show that the implementation of the garda reserve is failing and the minister's rhetoric has once again outstripped his ability to deliver on his promises.
