Minister hails success of three-year-old smoking ban
Thursday, 29 March 2007
The minister responsible for Ireland's workplace smoking has hailed the measure as an "outstanding success".
Ireland became the first European country to completely outlaw smoking in the workplace when the ban was introduced exactly three years ago today.
Several other countries have since followed suit, with Northern Ireland the next to follow the Republic's lead at the end of April.
The initiative was introduced by Enterprise Minister Micheal Martin in his previous role as Minister for Health.
Experts say the ban has been a great success in combating the ill effects of second-hand smoke, as well as encouraging smokers to kick the habit.
Speaking to mark the third anniversary today, Mr Martin said he wanted to pay tribute to the people of Ireland for the manner in which they have embraced the measure.
