Asbestos fears after fire at tyre factory in Limerick

Monday, 11 June 2007

Public health concerns have emerged following a huge fire at tyre factory in Limerick city this morning.

The fire was spotted at the Mid West Tyres facility on the Dock Road just after midnight and was still smouldering this morning.

A fire inspector has ordered that no traffic or pedestrians pass nearby due to an asbestos risk in the building.

Diversions are in place and motorists are facing major delays in the city as a result.

Members of Limerick's Fire Service are expected to remain at the scene for a number of hours.

Meanwhile, Mid West Tyres says no workers will lose their jobs as a result of the blaze.
