Youth organisation calls for increase in tax on alcohol

A leading youth organisation has called on the government to raise taxes on alcohol in an effort to cut alcohol abuse.
Youth Work Ireland, the umbrella group for voluntary youth services, said the government should learn from the Conservative Party in Britain, which is demanding similar action in the UK.
Spokesperson Michael McLoughlin said that increasing taxation has been shown to work, particularly on products targeted at young people.
"There's only been one experience in Ireland so far, and that was about three or four years when there was an increase in spirits and alcopops in the Budget, and it was shown to cause a decrease in the amount of consumption," he explained.
