Up to 200kgs of cannabis found in sea off west coast

Tuesday, 18 September 2007

Further searches are taking place in the sea off the west coast today following the discovery of up to 200 kilos of cannabis in the water yesterday.

Details of the discovery are still sketchy, with the Gardai and Customs giving different versions of events.

The Gardai say 140kgs of the drug were found during searches by customs officers and naval personnel in Galway Bay.

Customs, however, says eight bales of cannabis weighing 200kg were discovered by a fishing vessel around 50 miles west of Slyne Head.

The drugs have an estimated street value of between €1m and €1.4m.
