Cash was exchanged at bank in small amounts, Ahern tells tribunal

The Taoiseach this afternoon began his fourth day of questioning at the Mahon Tribunal.
Bertie Ahern was again asked about the sum of €30,000 in sterling, which he said he bought from AIB Bank between January and June 1995.
Bank records show that no such sterling transaction took place during this period.
The Taoiseach told the tribunal earlier this year that he bought the currency from the bank sometime in the first part of 1995, but that he didn't recall the exact date or location.
However, he said that to the best of his knowledge the transaction was done at AIB O'Connell Street.
Today Bertie Ahern said it was more likely that he gave the money to someone to change in small instalments on his behalf, which would make the transaction almost untraceable.
The Taoiseach agreed that there were not many people to whom he would entrust this large transaction, but he said none of the people to whom he could have given it had been able to confirm what happened.
