Eritrean man jailed for seven years for Dublin rape
Tuesday, December 18, 2007
A 19-year-old Eritrean national whose sentence for raping a 42 year old woman has been put back a number of times because he was too dangerous to be left in court has been jailed for seven years.
Ms Justice Maureen Clark described Bereket Mekonnen, of no fixed abode, as a very damaged and disturbed man who was at high risk of re-offending.
He was found guilty last February of raping the woman at St Stephen's Green in August 2005.
Mekonnen appeared in court a number of times for sentencing, but it had to be adjourned because he was deemed too dangerous to be left in court
In November, it took six prison officers to restrain him and he was carried kicking and screaming from the court.
Another time, he said he had alcohol taken and, on another occasion, he was in a state of undress.
In sentencing, Ms Justice Clark referred to his claims of being tortured by government agents in Eritrea because he brought an opposition party magazine to school.
She said he had scars and injuries which were consistent with his story of recent torture.
Today again he slammed his books on the bench and had to be restrained once again by officers.
The judge said he was an angry, anti-social and potentially dangerous man who had threatened to get even with all those involved in the trial
She jailed him for seven years, backdating it to June 2006, when he was taken into custody.
