E-coli present in one-third of private water schemes
Thursday, 24 January 2008
More than one-third of Ireland's private water schemes are contaminated with the e-coli bacteria, according to the latest data from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The bug, which comes from human and animal waste, is also present in 8% of public water schemes.
The EPA figures are based on analysis of almost 250,000 individual water samples over the past two years.
The agency says it has created an amber list of water schemes that have unacceptable quality, but will not be making the list public.
Instead, it says it will be taking action through the courts if necessary to force suppliers to bring water quality up to standard.
