High levels of radon gas found in Co Tipperary house

Monday, 3 March 2008

A house in Co Tipperary has been found to contain 45 times the acceptable level of the cancer-causing gas radon.

The Radiological Protection Institute says the owner of the house near Ballyporeen has taken the appropriate steps to fix the problem.

However, the institute is urging all householders to test for the radioactive gas, which seeps up naturally from below the ground and can get trapped in poorly ventilated buildings.

An estimated 91,000 homes in Ireland have high levels of the gas, but only 4,000 have so far been identified.

The RPI estimates that one-fifth of all homes in Tipperary and north Cork have elevated radon levels.
