Govt to stop investing pension funds in cluster bombs
Tuesday, 4 March 2008
The Irish Government has reportedly promised to stop investing state pension funds in companies that make cluster bombs.
Reports this morning say the National Pension Reserve Fund has decided to immediately stop investing in such companies.
The Government is also reportedly planning new legislation allowing for "ethical" concerns to be taken into account when the body invests state money.
The Irish branch of Amnesty International has welcomed the move and says it wants to see this legislation ensure that Irish people's money is not invested in "companies or products that create human rights violations".
