Row expected over plans to pipe Shannon water to Dublin
Monday, 24 March 2008
An urban-rural row is expected if Dublin city council proceeds with a plan to take water from the Shannon.
It is expected there will be a further half a million people living in the greater Dublin area by 2021.
This has led to the proposal to take water from Lough Ree on the Shannon and pipe it the 100km to the capital.
A study on the proposal is expected to be completed within the next three months.
While consultants estimate that this would only involve extracting 4% of the river flow locals are concerned at the impact on the lake.
Some have claimed that Dublin should first deal with the problem of the 20m litres leaking from the city's pipe network every day.
