Court overrules parents' objections to blood transfusion for twins
Thursday, 24 April 2008
The High Court has granted the HSE an order allowing it to give a blood transfusion to severely anaemic twins if they need it when they're born.
Their Irish parents, who are both Jehovah's Witnesses, objected to the children being given any blood products on religious grounds.
In a letter to Ms Justice Mary Laffoy, the mother asked that the medical team would use bloodless alternatives first.
She also said she understood the seriousness of the situation and that she wouldn't interfere with the High Court's decision.
