She recently announced that she was terminally ill with cancer.
She passed away peacefully at the Blackrock Hospice in Dublin in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Ms O Faol€in never married but in her memoir, "Are You Somebody?" she wrote about her 13 year relationship with journalist Nell McCafferty.
More recently she lived in New York with her partner and daughter.
