Three face trial today over Robert McCartney killing
Monday, May 12, 2008
The trial of three men accused of involvement in the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney begins later today.
The murder came to international prominence when the sisters of the deceased campaigned for republicans to give evidence to the police.
Robert McCartney, aged 33, was beaten and stabbed to death outside a bar in central Belfast in January 2005.
His sisters claimed a local leading republican had ordered the killing and that others had covered up what they knew.
They took their case to Dublin and the White House, putting huge pressure on Sinn Fein members to go to the police with whatever evidence they had.
Today, Terence Davison, aged 52, faces a murder charge, while James McCormick, aged 39, is accused of causing an affray and Joseph Fitzpatrick, aged 47, is accused of affray and assault.
