ICTU pushing for 'yes' vote in Lisbon referendum

Friday, May 16, 2008

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions is pushing for a 'yes' vote in the forthcoming referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

ICTU general secretary David Begg told the IMPACT conference in Kilkenny today that Irish workers would need to endorse the treaty to get the support of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Voters will go to the polls in the referendum on June 12th.

He said a lot of important legal provisions would come into force if the charter was ratified as part of the treaty.
