VHI pay-outs in substance abuse cases up 50%

The amount of money paid out by the VHI in alcohol and substance abuse claims has increased by 50% in four years.
The company says such claims cost it €7.9m in 2006, compared to €5.3m in 2002.
Alcoholic disorders accounted for 14% of all psychiatric admissions in 2003, with admissions highest in the 25 to 44 age group.
The VHI says adult alcohol consumption increased by 17% between 1994 and 2004.
