Hanafin says social welfare payments will not be cut
Friday, 4 July 2008
The Social Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin is insisting her Department will not be hit by next week's spending cuts.
The minister said that social welfare payments will be protected, despite the €500m the Government is seeking in savings.
This comes as the latest CSO figures show unemployment has risen from 4.8% to 5.7%.
The number of people claiming the dole now stands at 217,400.
Minister Hanafin inisted the tough economic situation will not affect these people's payments.
