Chambers Ireland rows in behind Corrib Gas Field project

Monday, 12 January 2009

Chambers Ireland has said that the opening up of the Corrib Gas field is crucial for Ireland's energy supplies.

In a statement this afternoon, the business group said the controversial project will play an important role in securing our energy sources into the future.

It also says the Corrib project will help boost our economy by providing jobs in the mid-west, and reducing our dependence on fuel imports.

The Irish people won't actually own the gas, so security of supply issues won't be altered. Shell and the Corrib partners will own all the gas in the Corrib field, and will be able to sell it anyone they like. Since the British suppliers will be eager to buy gas from Ireland, the price and supply won't be effected for Irish consumers.

What would be good would be if Bord Gáis had a stake in the Corrib field and the rest of the country's natural resources, but under the current government (Green & Fianna Fáil) there are no plans for this. Since Marathon Oil, one of the Corrib partners is operating from a small office in an industrial park in Cork, there seems no logical reason why the people of Ireland can not have a similar stake in this and future projects.

Ireland's natural resources were estimated by the Department of Natural Resources to be worth 450 billion last year. It's crazy to simply give this money away for no return.
