Parliament head says Maze centre would be welcome
Monday, 24 November 2008
The president of the European Parliament has said he would welcome the establishment of a centre for conflict transformation in the North.
Hans-Gert Pottering is in Stormont today for talks with First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.
A centre for conflict transformation has been proposed for the site of the former Maze Prison near Belfast.
However, unionists have expressed concern that the centre could become a shrine to the 10 republican hunger strikers who died in the prison in the early 1980s.
