MP calls for PSNI to crack down on anti-social behaviour in Crossmaglen
Tuesday, 10 July 2007
The distance the North has travelled recently became clear again today when the Sinn Fein MP for Newry and Armagh asked the police to step up actions against anti-social behaviour in the border village of Crossmaglen.
Conor Murphy said he wants a meeting with police to discuss their concerns about violence and criminality in the area.
In the old days, Crossmaglen, a fiercely republican village, was a no-go area for the police, unless they were accompanied by a patrol of heavily armed British soldiers and only rarely even then.
Its reputation was such that a favourite rebel song in the area refers to the fighting men of Crossmaglen.
Now Mr Murphy wants a meeting with the local police commander to crack down on what he says are growing concerns over a small minority involved in anti-social activity.
A number of people have been seriously injured as a result of assaults and he wants the village to get the policing service it's entitled to, criticising their response to date.
