Push for agreement on devolution of policing in North

Saturday, 29 December 2007

The Northern Secretary, Shaun Woodward, has urged politicians at Stormont to agree on the devolution of policing and justice in the New Year.

He said it could only happen if all the parties agreed, however, although London would not stand in the way.

The issue could become a potential row between Sinn Fein and the DUP.

Sinn Fein says the St. Andrews proposals agreed by the Irish and British governments sets May as the target date for devolution.

The DUP says it can't happen unless there's sufficient confidence within the unionist community - and that confidence doesn't yet exist.

Northern Secretary Shaun Woodward said in his new year message people expected the political parties to finish the job and take over the reins on policing and justice.

Only when that is completed can the North's full potential be realised.
