Paisley under fresh pressure over Causeway plan

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

The DUP's Ian Paisley Jnr is coming under pressure today over fresh revelations about his links to property developer Seymour Sweeney.

Mr Paisley Jnr has already attracted controversy over his ties with the businessman, who is hoping to build a private visitor centre at the Giant's Causeway.

Mr Sweeney is a member of the DUP and a friend of the Paisley family.

It has now emerged that Mr Paisley Jnr lobbied the British Government on behalf of the causeway project during peace talks at St Andrew's in Scotland in October 2006.

He is denying that he used DUP support for power-sharing as leverage to secure concessions on commercial or constituency matters.

However, Sinn Fein MLA Daithi McKay says he has serious questions to answer, both to the public and to his colleagues within the DUP.
