Cowen's new cabinet gets down to work today

Thursday, May 08, 2008

Brian Cowen's new team of ministers are set to begin their first day full day of business this morning.

The new Taoiseach's cabinet contains a few surprises, but no real shocks.

Mary Coughlan has been elevated to Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, while Brian Lenihan takes over as Finance Minister and Dermot Ahern moves to the Department of Justice.

Michael Martin is the new Foreign Affairs Minister, with Batt O'Keefe promoted to Education Minister, Mary Hanafin moving to Social and Family Affairs and Martin Cullen taking over at Arts, Sport and Tourism.

Elsewhere, Brendan Smith has been named Agriculture Minister, Pat Carey becomes Government Chief Whip and Barry Andrews is the new Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.
