Cannon says Lisbon will secure Ireland's place in Europe

Thursday, May 15, 2008

New Progressive Democrats leader Ciaran Cannon says voting in favour of the Lisbon Treaty will secure Ireland's positive place in the future of Europe.

The Galway-based Senator was speaking today at the launch of the party's campaign for a 'yes' vote, which was also attended by Health Minister Mary Harney and former European Parliament president Pat Cox.

Ms Harney said a 'yes' vote would secure Ireland's economic interests, while Mr Cox said it would enhance Ireland's capacity to better serve the global community.

Senator Cannon, meanwhile, said Ireland had been transformed for the better by EU membership and it was important that this strong link was maintained.
