Lenihan willing to examine politicians' expenses
Friday, 4 July 2008
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has said he willing to examine whether future increases in the expenses paid to politicians are warranted.
However, Mr Lenihan says he will not be undoing an expenses increase that came into force on Tuesday, the day before the exact state of the public finances was made public.
Reports this morning say politicians and public servants received increases of between 1% and 4% in their expense entitlements despite government calls for belt-tightening and impending cutbacks in public services.
The increases have been awarded automatically every July for the past decade, but Mr Lenihan says this may change in the future.
