Cabinet set to agree major programme of cutbacks
Tuesday, 8 July 2008
The cabinet is expected to agree spending cuts of up to €500m for the remainder of this year when it holds its regular weekly meeting in Dublin this morning.
The cutbacks in various government departments and state agencies follow a major deterioration in the public finances this year that has left the country facing into a period of recession.
Ministers are expected to agree to a number of measures, including a ban on new recruitment, curbs on travel and cuts in advertising and consultancy services.
A number of National Development Plan projects may also be delayed.
The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, is expected to outline the Government's plan of action in the Dail today, with a debate planned for tomorrow and Thursday before full sittings of the Oireachtas end for the summer.
