Rescue operation mounted after Roscommon landslides

Thursday, 14 August 2008

A major rescue operation was mounted in Co Roscommon last night after a series of landslides raised fears for the safety of an elderly man living in the Arigna area.

The mudslides cut off all road access to the 80-year-old man's house.

The Sligo Coastguard helicopter and the fire service were sent to the scene, but were unable to mount a rescue attempt due to adverse weather conditions.

The Sligo Mountain Rescue Team eventually reached the 80-year-old man at around 4am, but he declined to leave his home.
