Tribunal reports huge jump in race discrimination cases

The number of complaints about racial discrimination being referred to the Equality Tribunal more than doubled last year, according to new figures out today.
The tribunal's annual report says overall complaints were up 36% in 2007.
Cases relating to discrimination on the grounds of disability were up 65%, while claims of unfair treatment on the grounds of age and gender rose by 14% and 5% respectively.
Almost 14,000 people have brought claims of discrimination to the tribunal since it was set up in 1999.
