Derby road named after Lara croft
Saturday, 27 February 2010
Derby City Council said the name was shortlisted for an online poll as it was created by Derby-based company Core Design in the mid-1990s.
Actress Angelina Jolie went on to play the character in subsequent films.
Part of the ring road will also be named Mercian Way after the army regiment which recruits soldiers from the area.
Nearly 28,000 people voted in the online poll but Lara Croft was the clear winner, with 89% of the vote, the council said.
Lara Croft Way will now become the name of the Osmaston Road to Burton Road stretch of Derby's new £36 million inner ring road.
Mercian Way received 6% of the vote and will become the new name of the Burton Road to Stafford Street stretch of the road.
Other ideas included John Flamsteed Way, after the first Astronomer Royal, to Merlin Way, in recognition of the famous Rolls-Royce engine.
Councillor Lucy Care, in charge of planning and transportation at the council, said: "The suggestion of Lara Croft Way was one of the most popular in an earlier, lower-key request to the public for suggestions for names.
"The vote itself clearly really captured the imagination of people from across the world and this combined support means that Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore."
