Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has hailed US president Barack Obama's blues singing as "courageous".

Music legend Jagger, 68, said the president did "very well" when bluesman Buddy Guy successfully persuaded him to join in on a few lines of Sweet Home Chicago, the blues anthem of the president's home town, during an East Room concert earlier in the week.

"I thought he was courageous, because there was some element of reluctance," Jagger said, adding that "it was a hard moment for the president to get out of".

In an AP interview, Jagger also said he was pleased to see that first lady Michelle Obama was wearing a dress that night designed by L'Wren Scott, his long-time girlfriend, who had a front-row seat for the concert.

Jagger said he has never been invited to play at the White House before - or for any head of state - and he rated it a "surreal gig experience".

"I loved it," he said. "It was really unusual, surreal, and strange, but very enjoyable ... I went out there and I tried to put out my best."

Speaking about the possibility of the Rolling Stones reuniting this year for a 50th anniversary tour, he said: "I hope we certainly do something. It would be very appropriate, I think, and I look forward to doing something. But nothing is yet booked."

Jagger and other blues greats played the East Room on Tuesday as part of an In Performance at the White House concert.

Must we stand idly by while world leaders spout this codswallop?

Funny how the news agenda gets tired. Like the quotes. Only a couple of months ago, we were all bracing for Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear installations. And for serious pressure on Bashar al-Assad to end his "barbaric campaign".

Don't let sisters stop you looking for love, Cheryl

What's wrong with wanting a man? I ask because lately I've lost count of the miserable, lonely female celebrities being told by other women that they should stay single.

Seeing is believing when it comes to the justice system

A Bill in the Queen’s Speech will, hopefully, speed up the process of letting some more sunlight into Northern Ireland’s rather musty justice system.

So that's why their pupils were glazed in Play School

Odd period, the 1970s. I've tended to deride them as grim, which they certainly were, but I appreciate now the music and, er, that's about it. They weren't particularly happy years in Northern Ireland.

Tragedy is opportunity for conflict resolution envoys

The Good Friday Agreement is a cure for which there is no known illness. Nowhere in its 11,000 words does it identify the problem which it purports to solve.
