MPs call for 'happiness' statistics
Monday, 7 June 2010
Promoting happiness and well-being was a "legitimate and important goal" of the Government and needed be taken more seriously, they said.
Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson reminded Prime Minister David Cameron of a speech in 2006 when he said: "It's time we admitted that there's more to life than money, and it's time we focused not just on GDP but on GWB - general well-being."
A Commons motion tabled by the East Dunbartonshire MP noted surveys showed the level of happiness in the UK had "remained broadly static for at least a quarter of a century."
She went on to call for the "introduction of official and regularly conducted statistics on national well-being in the UK to inform policy-making."
The motion has so far been backed by five other MPs.
