Smurf fans stage world record bid

enlargeMore than 20 countries held events for Global Smurfs Day to mark the birth of Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford - best known by his pen name Peyo - who introduced the distinctive figures in a comic strip in 1958.
Over 2,000 blue people gathered at London's 02 Arena, while the total global figure hit 4,617. The previous record stood at 2,510.
The tiny forest dwellers' television debut in 1981 led to them becoming a global phenomenon.
Each Smurf is known by their personality or role, such as Brainy, Doctor, Farmer and Jokey. They became known for their unique language in which nouns and verbs were interchanged.
Peyo, born on June 25 1928, died of a heart attack on Christmas Eve in 1992.
A Smurfs film, featuring the voice of Katy Perry, is due out in the UK in August.
