Taaffe's Glenfinn Captain lands Clonmel feature

Thursday, 13 November 2008

Glenfinn Captain (5-2) achieved a career-high when landing the Grade Two Clonmel Oil Chase in impressive fashion.

Tom Taaffe's gelding was touted as an Arkle contender a couple of seasons back, but he's been beset by injuries and ended a two-year drought over this course and distance last month.

Stepped up in class, he travelled strongly in the hands of Barry Geraghty and having touched down over two out in the lead, he stormed away to beat One Cool Cookie by five lengths.

Grand National third Snowy Morning was sent off the 13-8 favourite but was tapped for toe a mile from home and plugged on at one pace to finish out of the frame.

Taaffe said: "Obviously he's coming back to himself. I'd like to thank (owner) JP McManus, who's been very patient with me and let me do my own thing with this horse.

"He had a bad case of colic in January 2007. It was touch and go, the horse nearly died.

"We'll have to have a think now where we go next. He probably won't run again until Christmas or just before. The Boylesports Gold Cup at Cheltenham in mid-December is a possibility."

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
