Silver guaranteed for Irish boxers in Mexico
Saturday, 1 November 2008
Ireland's incredible journey at the AIBA World Youth Championships continued last night and in the early hours of this morning after Ray Moylett and Jamie Kavanagh marched into tonight's finals following semi final wins in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Both boxers are now guaranteed at least silver medals.
But welterweight David Joe Joyce, who had been forced to box virtually one handed because of an injury to his right hand, had to settle for a bronze medal despite a heroic display in his semi final with Mexican, Oscar Melina.
Light heavyweight Thomas McCarthy also had to accept bronze after being edged out by Russian National Youth champion, Marten Magomedov.
