N Ireland suffer qualification blow against Iceland

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Northern Ireland's hopes of qualification for the Euro 2008 finals have been dealt a severe blow following a 2-1 defeat to Iceland last night.

The game looked to be heading for a draw before a Keith Gillespie own goal in the final minute gave victory to Iceland.

Elsewhere, England's campaign remains on track after a 3-0 win over Russia at Wembley, with Michael Owen scoring twice.

The most noteworthy result of the night was in Paris, however, where Scotland defeated France 1-0 for the second time in the qualification campaign.

James McFadden was on target with a long range shot midway through the second half to send the visitors to the top of Group B.
