Bobby Robson set to lose battle with lung cancer
Thursday, 7 August 2008
England football legend Bobby Robson has admitted that he is fighting a losing battle with lung cancer.
Robson, who was employed as a consultant by the FAI during Steve Staunton's recent reign as manager, says doctors have told him he is unlikely to survive his latest battle with the illness.
"I have accepted what they have told me and I am determined to make the most of what time I have left," he is quoted as saying this morning.
"I am going to die sooner rather than later, but then everyone has to go some time and I have enjoyed every minute."

what a true gentleman this man has always been. One of my absolute heros not so much for what he has acheived (although he has acheived a lot) But for his great positive attitiude.
Even in his darkest hour (as this must be) he is still able to be positive. A true legend as a man first and as a football Icon second.
A lesson to us all.
good luck Bobby and all the best.

As a Hearts supporter and a Scot may I pass on my best wishes and high regards to a fantastic Englishman - a great manager with Ipswich, Porto England and the Magpies - and a true gentleman with that lovely soft Geordie accent which always seemed to talk nothing but sense.
Its so typical that he reacts at the end just like he has done all his life. He has the respect and admiration of the whole of Scotland.

It's a brave and fulfilled man who can comment publicly about the likely end of his life in such an open and and calm manner. Great respect to a lovely man, let's hope that he can be with us for a s long as possible.

Dear Sir Bobby, I have just read the article on your medical condition. I have always admired you for your strength and vigour. You did a fantastic job as England manager and proved your worth outside England as well. The football world will always be in debt to your contribution. May the rest of your time be filled with love and honour that you deserve. VS - Johannesburg (South Africa)

This is devastating news, as a Newcastle fan I will always be fond of Sir Bobby, he was a great ambassador for our club and our country, I hope he makes the most of his remaining time with us, it's a shame newcastle couldn't win something to make him proud

Is it nearly 30 years since he led Ipswich to those amazing heights? A great man whose love for football is enduring as well as his enthusiasm. Arguably the last of the great English managers. With that kind of spirit I don't expect he'll be leaving us anytime soon.
