Report backs FIFA stance on 6+5 rule
Thursday, 26 February 2009
A report by a German-based organisation has concluded that FIFA plans to limit the number of foreign players in soccer teams do not breach EU rules.
The so-called 6+5 rule has been approved by 155 of FIFA's member organisations, but has been declared illegal by the European Commission.
The Dusseldorf-based Institute for European Affairs, however, says the rule would be allowed under EU laws as it is merely designed to improve sporting balance between clubs and associations.
