Three Athy boxers go through at the Senior Open

Three boxers from the St Michael's Athy club have come through their preliminary round bouts at the Open Senior Competition at the National Stadium.

Irish 2008 Olympian John Joe Joyce, David Joyce and Hugh Joyce all had their hands raised in victory at the home of Irish boxing overnight.

Reigning heavyweight champion, Con Sheehan also emerged victorious courtesy of a 10-4 win over Willie Byrne, while Tom Blaney, Brian Brosnan, Stephen O'Reilly and Jimmy Sweeny also received positive verdicts at the South Circular Road venue.

The Open Senior Competition will recommence with ten semi-final bouts tonight, with the finals taking place on Friday October 10th at the National Stadium.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association are using the Open Senior Competition as part of their selection process for Novembers European Senior Championships in Liverpool.
