Dempsey publishes bill to reduce drink-drive limit
Friday, 30 October 2009
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has published his controversial legislation aimed at cutting the drink-driving limit on Irish roads.
Mr Dempsey's plan to cut the limit from 80mgs to 50mgs has already caused a backlash from Fianna Fail backbenchers threatening to scupper the legislation.
They claim the measure would damage rural pubs and communities by forcing people living in isolated areas to stay at home rather than socialising.
However, Mr Dempsey insists that the measure will save lives on the roads.
