Dublin event to mark anniversary of Burma uprising

Friday, 8 August 2008

An event is due to be held on Dublin's O'Connell Street this afternoon to mark the 20th anniversary of the pro-democracy uprising in Burma.

Up to 3,000 people were killed and thousands more were imprisoned during widespread protests against the country's military dictatorship in 1988.

Today's Dublin event is part of a global day of action to remember the uprising.

Burma remains under military rule to this day, with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi spending much of the last 20 years under house arrest.
