Heroin addict given three year sentence for handbag snatching
Friday, 18 July 2008
A heroin addict who snatched a 74-year-old woman's handbag has been given a three year sentence.
36-year-old Gary Maguire of Dolphin's House, Rialto in Dublin also robbed another handbag from a 77-year-old woman later the same day.
Maguire pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery at Walkinstown Avenue and theft of a handbag on Church Avenue, Rathmines on March 9th 2002.
He had 19 previous convictions.
Judge Katherine Delahunt said it was his intention to rob the women "regardless of their age or frailty" and that they were "very vulnerable people".
However, she suspended the last year of the sentence having taken into account the efforts that Maguire had made to rehabilitate and come off drugs.
