Iarnrod Eireann says rail disruptions now more likely

Sunday, 14 October 2007

Iarnrod Eireann says disruptions to rail services due to strike action are now more likely, claiming that SIPTU has refused to enter talks this morning to discuss a document prepared by the Labour Relations Commission.

Thousands of rail passengers in the south of the country could be hit by a strike from midnight tonight.

Line inspection and maintenance staff, who are members of SIPTU and the NBRU, are taking the action amid concerns about work practices at Iarnrod Eireann.

Services due to be affected include routes from Cork, Kerry, Ennis and Limerick, to Dublin, as well as commuter services in Cork.
