SF backs establishment of NI Truth Commission
Friday, 26 September 2008
Sinn Fein has given its backing to the establishment of a Truth Commission in the North after consulting with rank-and-file republicans.
The decision is being interpreted as a sign that the IRA is prepared to co-operate with efforts to address the legacy of hurt caused by the Troubles.
However, republicans have been insisting that other parties to the conflict, including British forces and the police, must also come clean about their role in the violence.
Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams says the willingness of individuals to volunteer information will be dependent on any Truth Commission being international, independent, fair and equitable.
