SF says Lisbon is bad deal for Ireland

Monday, 28 September 2009

Sinn Fein has placed ads in today's national newspapers arguing that the Lisbon Treaty is a bad deal for Ireland.

The party says the treaty is the same one rejected by the Irish people last year, despite the EU guarantees secured by the Government on issues like abortion, neutrality and taxation.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the Government got it wrong on NAMA and An Bord Snip and has also got it wrong on the Lisbon Treaty.

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan, meanwhile, is asking Libertas leader Declan Ganley to confirm that his financial backers are not betting against Ireland on the international markets.

Reports over the weekend named a hedge fund as being one of the Mr Ganley's backers.

Mr Lenihan says a 'no' vote would damage international confidence in Ireland and it is important to know that those behind Libertas won't benefit from this.
