Reward offered for info on Liverpool truck hi-jacking

Tuesday, 26 August 2008

A €50,000 reward has been offered for information about a gang with Northern accents who carried out what police have called a "terrifying hi-jack".

The robbery took place near Birkenhead outside Liverpool when a truck driver was forced to hand over a consignment at knife-point.

Earlier this month, a driver was tricked into pulling over by five men posing as vehicle inspectors.

The men forced the driver to go to Birkenhead docks where he was ordered to exchange his trailer for another one containing a million pounds worth of cigarettes.

He was then forced to drive to a services area where the container was taken and driven away.

Four of the gang had northern accents.

Police said the 46-year-old lorry driver had been left "distraught" by the ordeal.
